Fast-growing biz list counts 2 from Buffalo

Two Buffalo companies have been ranked among the fastest growing inner-city companies in the nation.AEP Books and Media and S&W Contracting of WNY were selected for the 2012 Inner City 100 by the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) and Fortune Magazine. The list recognizes successful inner-city companies and their CEOs for entrepreneurship, innovative business practices and job creation in urban communities.AEP Books was ranked No. 42 this year, with a five-year annual growth rate of 34 percent. The company, founded in 1992 by CEO Scott Meacham, had revenues in 2010 of $11.4 million. The company supplies books and multimedia, including rare and out-of-print items.S&W Contracting was ranked No. 85, with a five-year growth rate of 14 percent. Founded by Sandra Spicer in 1999, the general construction and consulting services firm had revenues in 2010 of $1.9 million.The rankings were announced at an event May 9 in Boston, where winners attended a two-day business symposium with workshops from some of the nation’s leading business schools, including Harvard Business School, Babson College and Boston University.Winners on the 2012 list were selected from 46 cities and 30 states. The 2012 Inner City 100 winners grew at a compound annual growth rate of 40 percent and an average standard growth rate of 577 percent between 2006 and 2010.
